Edinburgh: A European City

The relationship of Scotland's capital with its European neighbours, from the 13th Century Auld Alliance with France, to extensive and enduring trade which has left its mark on Scotland and the continent, has always been a close one. This city of the Enlightenment retains its distinct internationalist identity today, and the people of Edinburgh (and Scotland) live with a social, cultural and political heritage which is thoroughly European.
